01 / MATCH YOUR MODEL
Confirm this applies to your appliance.
- Whirlpool-style dishwasher with the two-piece user-removable filtration system: upper quarter-turn basket and lower flat screen. Confirm this exact design in the model manual. Excludes self-cleaning and foreign-object-cup designs.
Representative educational geometry, not manufacturer CAD or certification. Controls, access points and parts vary. Your exact model manual takes priority.
02 / SAFETY FIRST
Read this before starting.
- Correct circuit must be identified; uncertain isolation means stop and use service.
- No blind sump probing, pump access, hoses disconnected, or chemical drain cleaner.
- A little water below the filter can be normal; animation should depict abnormal pooled water, not demand a bone-dry sump.
03 / CHECK THE SYMPTOM
Choose the right next step.
- Abnormal pooled water is different from the small amount of water that may normally remain below the filter.
- Confirm that your model has a user-removable filter. Self-cleaning designs require a different procedure.
04 / PREPARATION
Have the right items ready.
- Your model manual and an identified dishwasher circuit breaker
- Towels, a container, a cup, a sponge and a soft brush
These checks are for your use only. They are not saved and do not certify compatibility.
05 / THE PROCEDURE
Work through the checks.
- Isolate the power. For a dishwasher with a removable filter, start by switching off its power at the correctly identified breaker. Let hot water cool, and check your manual's filter instructions.
- Remove standing water. Lay towels down, remove the bottom rack, and scoop standing water into a container. Sponge up the remainder so you can clearly see the filter.
- Lift out the filter. For the two-piece filter shown, turn the upper basket a quarter-turn counterclockwise and lift it out. Then lift the lower screen slightly and pull it forward.
- Rinse away debris. Rinse the filter under warm running water. Use a soft brush for stuck-on food. Avoid abrasive tools, and never reach blindly into the sump where glass may be hiding.
- Lock it back in. Seat the lower screen under its locating tabs first. Insert the upper basket and turn clockwise until locked. It must not turn freely. Never run without both filters.
- Test the drain. Restore power and run the manual's recommended rinse or drain test. If standing water remains, stop and arrange service. Do not add chemical drain cleaner or remove the pump.
06 / VERIFY THE RESULT
Test safely and watch the result.
- Run the rinse or drain test specified by the manual, with all filter parts correctly installed and locked.
- Stop for continued pooled water, leaks, or a filter that will not seat securely.
