Electric dryer not heating: cycle and airflow checks

Check the heat setting, lint screen, load and visible venting on a conventional vented electric dryer.

Illustrated version: Conventional vented electric dryer, not gas, heat-pump, condenser, or combination washer-dryer. Lint screen location and cycle names vary. Check applicability ↓

Before you follow the illustration: Read the safety and stop conditions. Match the exact appliance design and use its model-specific instructions.

Representative educational illustration with working and waiting time compressed. Read the exact model scope, safety checks and complete written procedure before starting.

01 / MATCH YOUR MODEL

Confirm this applies to your appliance.

  • Conventional vented electric dryer, not gas, heat-pump, condenser, or combination washer-dryer. Lint screen location and cycle names vary.

Representative educational geometry, not manufacturer CAD or certification. Controls, access points and parts vary. Your exact model manual takes priority.

02 / SAFETY FIRST

Read this before starting.

  • No breaker reset, outlet probing, cabinet opening, fuse bypass, or gas work.
  • A vent obstruction is a stop condition, not an instruction to keep testing.
  • Lint cleaning helps airflow/poor drying; not represented as repairing a failed heater.

03 / CHECK THE SYMPTOM

Choose the right next step.

  • Air Only and Air Fluff intentionally run without heat.
  • Poor drying from restricted airflow is different from a failed heater. A turning drum does not prove the heater has its full supply.

04 / PREPARATION

Have the right items ready.

  • Your model manual and garment care labels
  • A clear, safe view of the accessible exhaust duct and outdoor outlet
Before you begin

These checks are for your use only. They are not saved and do not certify compatibility.

05 / THE PROCEDURE

Work through the checks.

  1. Choose a heated cycle. Check the cycle first. Air Only and Air Fluff deliberately use no heat. Select a heated cycle and temperature appropriate for the garment care labels.
  2. Stop and clean the screen. Stop the dryer and let it cool. Pull out the lint screen, roll the lint off with your fingers, and put the screen fully back in place.
  3. Reduce a packed load. Remove some clothes if the drum is tightly packed. Leave space for tumbling. Restricted airflow can cause poor drying, even when the heater itself still works.
  4. Check visible venting. Look at accessible exhaust ducting without moving the dryer. If the duct is crushed or the outdoor outlet is blocked, stop and arrange vent service before using it.
  5. Run a short test. Only if the vent is already unobstructed and the lint screen seated, close the door and run a short heated test. Stop for burning smells or overheating.
  6. Still cold? Get service. If it still tumbles cold, arrange service. Electric dryers can run without full heater power. Leave supply checks, heater repairs, and thermal-fuse replacement to qualified professionals.

06 / VERIFY THE RESULT

Test safely and watch the result.

  • Test only with the screen fully seated and the exhaust path unobstructed. Follow the manual’s short heated test.
  • Stop for burning smells or overheating. If it still tumbles cold, arrange qualified service.
