Representative educational illustration with working and waiting time compressed. Read the exact model scope, safety checks and complete written procedure before starting.

01 / MATCH YOUR MODEL

Confirm this applies to your appliance.

  • Freezer-mounted automatic ice maker with a manually operated wire shutoff arm and removable ice bin; already connected to a working water supply. Excludes optical sensors, electronic paddle switches, stand-alone ice machines, and frozen mechanisms.

Representative educational geometry, not manufacturer CAD or certification. Controls, access points and parts vary. Your exact model manual takes priority.

02 / SAFETY FIRST

Read this before starting.

  • Ice maker stays OFF until bin work is finished.
  • No forced arm, ice chipping, test-point jumpers, manual fill, or mechanism contact.
  • Timing is explicitly for new installations; do not promise a 24-hour repair.
  • If supply has never been connected, do not enable maker; arrange proper installation.

03 / CHECK THE SYMPTOM

Choose the right next step.

  • This guide applies only to a manually operated wire-arm design already connected to a working water supply.
  • A frozen or stiff arm, thawing food or an unfamiliar mechanism requires a different next step. Never force it.

04 / PREPARATION

Have the right items ready.

  • Your exact refrigerator and ice-maker manual
  • A safely accessible ice bin and freezer controls
Before you begin

These checks are for your use only. They are not saved and do not certify compatibility.

05 / THE PROCEDURE

Work through the checks.

  1. Check the shutoff arm. For the wire-arm ice maker shown, gently raise the arm to Off before adjusting the bin. Follow your manual. Never force a stiff, frozen, or damaged arm.
  2. Make room around the bin. Keep the ice maker off while clearing misplaced food packages from around the bin. Store only the ice maker’s own ice in that container, with no bottles or bags.
  3. Seat the ice bin. Check that the bin sits directly beneath the ice maker in its proper position. If your model allows removal, follow its instructions and reinstall the bin fully.
  4. Turn ice production on. With the bin seated, gently lower the wire arm to the On position, as your manual directs. Keep your hands away from the ice mold and ejector.
  5. Check freezer temperature. Check the freezer setting; Whirlpool recommends zero degrees Fahrenheit. Close the door fully. If the freezer is warm or food is thawing, address cooling and food safety first.
  6. Allow time and recheck. New installations may need twenty-four hours for first ice and three days for full production. If ice still does not return, arrange service; do not dismantle valves or tubing.

06 / VERIFY THE RESULT

Test safely and watch the result.

  • After seating the bin and lowering the arm as directed, close the freezer door and monitor production.
  • A new installation may take 24 hours for first ice and three days for full production. This is not a promised repair time. Arrange service if the checks do not restore production.
