Match your repair
Whole-unit replacement of an existing Frost King A8236W/A82/36W face-mounted screw-on sweep on an inward-opening wood entry door. Match the replacement slots to sound existing holes in the known solid lower rail. Compatible threshold; door remains hinged; no new drilling.
Not covered by this guide
- Slide-on/U-shaped, kerf-insert, adhesive, brush, automatic/drop, or storm-door bottoms
- Metal, fiberglass, hollow/unknown lower rails, glazed low panels, or rated assemblies without their own approved mounting instructions
- Rot, unresolved sagging, damaged threshold, or a gap the chosen sweep cannot reach safely
Safety and stop conditions
- Keep a secured open door for removal and attachment; support the sweep and use eye protection for cutting.
- Side of door depends on swing; this demonstration deliberately fixes the scope to inward opening and inside mounting.
- Stop for structural damage, loose fixings, significant sag, incompatible threshold, or interference with normal opening and latching.
- Use sound existing holes only; no drilling, hole enlargement, forced slot alignment or longer-screw substitution.
- Use known-safe surfaces. Stop if removing the strip lifts suspect old paint; do not pry, scrape or sand it.
Tools and materials
- Frost King A8236W white aluminum/vinyl sweep, nominal 2-3/8 inches high by 36 inches long
- Compatible specified screws matching the original size and sound mounting holes
- Tape measure
- Pencil
- Screwdriver
- Metal-cutting hand saw and stable cutting support if shortening is required
- Safety glasses
- Sharp-edge handling precautions
Before you start
- The existing A8236W sweep is worn, but the threshold, door and solid mounting rail remain sound and normal door operation is unaffected.
- Match the same-model slots to sound existing mounting holes. Use compatible specified screws of the original size; do not change screw length.
- Stop for mismatched or loose holes, unknown lower-rail construction, glazing, hidden hardware, rated assemblies or suspect old coatings.
Repair steps
Confirm the sweep and door
Replace the complete Frost King screw-on aluminum-and-vinyl sweep on the inward-opening wood door shown. Confirm a sound mounting rail. Stop for rot, uncertain construction, or a fire-rated door.
Remove the worn sweep
Secure the open door, then unscrew the worn sweep while supporting it. Clean the mounting area and inspect screw holes. Leave the door on its hinges.
Remove the complete carrier and vinyl blade together without prying, planing or sawing the door. Stop if removal lifts suspect old paint; do not scrape or sand it.
Measure and shorten
Measure the door width and shorten the sweep if needed. Support it while cutting, wear eye protection, and remove sharp burrs. Keep vinyl and carrier aligned.
Measure the actual door rather than assuming a nominal 36-inch width. Cut only the replacement product, with hands clear of the cutting line. The listed 2-3/8-inch product height is not a maximum sealable gap.
Position against the threshold
Close the door. On its inside face, position the sweep so the vinyl flexes against the threshold. The rigid carrier must stay clear, and the sweep must not catch during opening.
Attach through existing holes
Open and secure the door. Align the new sweep’s slots with sound existing holes and fit the compatible screws. Stop if holes do not align or a screw will not grip; do not substitute longer screws.
Use the original compatible screw size and established mounting depth. Snug the carrier without distorting it. Do not drill, enlarge a hole or force a slot into alignment.
Check the full swing
Open, close, and latch the door. The vinyl should maintain contact when closed without dragging heavily or folding under. Adjust the height if needed; stop if normal operation cannot be restored.
Make height adjustments only within the existing slots. Do not shave the door or use extra closing force to compensate for a poor fit.
Check the result
- Only flexible vinyl touches the threshold; the rigid carrier stays clear.
- The door opens, closes and latches normally without heavy dragging or the seal folding underneath.
Common questions
Does the sweep go inside or outside?
For the inward-opening door shown, mount it inside. Frost King’s rule is that the sweep should not cross the threshold as the door swings.
Does 2-3/8 inches mean the largest gap it can seal?
No. That is the listed product height. Fit depends on the mounting position, threshold and usable vinyl reach; this guide does not claim a maximum gap.
Do I need to remove the door?
This is a face-mounted screw-on replacement performed with the door on its hinges. Other bottom seals use different methods.
What if it scrapes the floor?
Check placement and adjust only within its available slots. The door must open and latch normally; persistent drag means the fit needs attention.
What pilot bit does Frost King list?
Frost King’s general FAQ lists a 1/8-inch bit, but this demonstration makes no new holes. New-hole installation requires the actual door’s construction, compatible fastener size and safe depth to be established first.
