Match your repair
Replacement of an existing Frost King VA17SN screw-on perimeter set on a sound wooden door stop. The matching new preformed slots align with sound existing screw holes; no new drilling. Single ordinary hinged door already closes and latches correctly; top and two sides only.
Not covered by this guide
- Kerf-insert, magnetic, adhesive foam, or automatic seals
- Rotten/split stop, unresolved door sag, severely out-of-square frame
- Fire/smoke-rated assemblies or doors requiring special listed seals
- Bottom sweep or threshold repair
Safety and stop conditions
- Use an already compatible screw-on set on a sound wood stop. This guide is not a universal retrofit method.
- Stop for failed wood, stripped fixing points, significant door misalignment, or a fire/smoke-rated assembly.
- Support work when shortening aluminum and use eye protection; remove sharp burrs.
- Installation must preserve ordinary opening, closing, and latching. Never force or immobilize an exit door.
- Use sound existing holes only; no drilling, hole enlargement, forced slot alignment or longer-screw substitution.
- Use known-safe surfaces. Stop if removing the strip lifts suspect old paint; do not pry, scrape or sand it.
Tools and materials
- One Frost King VA17SN set: 3/4-inch carrier, two 7-foot side pieces and one 3-foot top piece
- Package-specified compatible mounting screws for the sound wood stop
- Tape measure
- Pencil
- Screwdriver matched to the actual fasteners
- Metal-cutting hand saw and safe cutting support if shortening is needed
- Safety glasses
- Protection from sharp cut aluminum edges
Before you start
- The existing VA17SN screw-on seal is worn, while the door already opens, closes and latches normally.
- Match the same model, carrier profile and preformed slots to sound existing holes. This does not convert kerf, adhesive, magnetic or rated-door seals.
- Stop for loose stops, damaged wood, suspect old coatings or holes that do not align or hold securely.
Repair steps
Match the replacement system
Use the Frost King VA17SN screw-on set on a sound wooden door stop. This method excludes kerf-insert and adhesive seals. Confirm the door already latches properly.
Remove the worn strips
Open and secure the door. Remove the old mounting screws and worn strips. Stop for rotten wood, loose trim, or damaged screw holes; the replacement needs a secure mounting surface.
Support each strip as its screws come out. Do not lever off the wooden stop. Stop if removal lifts suspect old paint; do not pry, scrape or sand it.
Measure and trim
Measure the top and both sides. Shorten the pieces as needed, using a supported cut and eye protection. Check that top and side ends will meet snugly.
Keep hands outside the cutting line, remove sharp burrs, and dry-fit the adjoining ends. Use the actual mounting runs, not an assumed cut allowance or universal mitre angle.
Set the sealing position
Close the door. Position the short strip on the top stop and the longer strips on the side stops, with the vinyl pressing firmly against the closed door. Keep the corners gap-free.
The hollow vinyl tube compresses against the door face while the rigid carrier rests on the stop. Check both top corners for snug joins.
Reuse sound mounting holes
Open and secure the door for screw access. Align the new slots with sound existing screw holes and attach the strips with the specified screws. Use the slots to adjust, then tighten. Stop if the holes do not align or hold securely.
Loosely fasten the carriers with compatible same-specification screws in the existing holes, restore the previously checked closed-door sealing position using the slots, then snug the screws. Do not drill, enlarge holes, force alignment or substitute longer screws.
Test the door
Close and latch the door without force. Check continuous seal contact. If the new seal prevents easy latching, adjust its position and retest. Stop if normal operation cannot be restored.
The bulb should compress rather than crush flat. Never enlarge the strike opening or slam the door to compensate. Do not block or immobilize an exit door.
Check the result
- The vinyl maintains continuous contact across the top and both sides, including the two top corners.
- The door opens, closes and latches normally without slamming or excessive pressure.
Common questions
Can this replace the seal pushed into a groove?
No. VA17SN is a screw-on carrier on the door stop. A kerf seal needs its own matching replacement and instructions.
Where does the seal touch?
The vinyl tube bears against the face of the closed door; the metal carrier attaches to the stop.
What if the door becomes hard to latch?
Reposition the carrier using the adjustment slots and retest. If it still needs force, stop and resolve the fit.
Which drill bit and screw length do I use?
This demonstration reuses sound, aligned existing holes with compatible specified fasteners. If new holes are necessary, obtain the door/stop-specific mounting requirements; the VA17SN sheet does not specify bit size, screw length or drilling depth.
