Rebuild a serviceable multi-turn shutoff
Internal stem-and-washer repair only: an identified, undamaged BrassCraft angle or straight multi-turn water stop that BrassCraft confirms accepts the BCSR01 kit. Leave the valve body and its pipe connections installed.
- Use genuine BrassCraft BCSR01, UPC 026613141527, only after confirming compatibility for the installed BrassCraft stop. Its product page identifies angle and straight multi-turn applications.
- Manufacturer catalog lists R15S-2P+5 stem/bibb washer, R15-78F bonnet packing and R15-6P friction washer in BCSR01. Follow the instructions and exploded drawing on the actual kit.
- The diagram shows the bibb washer at the inward stem tip; outward from the stem shoulder are the thin friction washer, packing washer and bonnet nut. Do not omit or substitute seals.
The animation illustrates the named mechanism. Use your exact fixture and replacement-part instructions if their design or sequence differs.
01 / DIAGNOSE BEFORE BUYING
Confirm the repair fits the problem.
- A stem/bonnet seep or failure to shut flow can indicate worn internal parts; confirm the leak location with the exterior dry.
- A leak at the pipe connection, cracked body or damaged seat is outside this rebuild. Do not assume every valve that needs several turns accepts the same kit.
This procedure does not cover
- Quarter-turn ball/cartridge valves, push-pull valves, unknown brands and unmatched stem designs
- Valve-body replacement, compression-ferrule removal, cutting, soldering or pipe repair
- A seized handle/bonnet, corroded or cracked body, damaged seat, or moving wall/floor pipe
- Shared-building water isolation without authorized building coordination
02 / COMPATIBILITY & PREPARATION
Have the matching parts ready.
- Phillips screwdriver
- Correctly fitting hand wrenches, including one to counterhold the valve body
- Bucket, towels, flashlight, gloves and eye protection
- Confirmed BCSR01 kit with readable instructions and an accessible working upstream shutoff
These checks are for your use. They do not certify compatibility and are not saved.

Close a working upstream or main water supply before opening the valve. Never rely on the failed stop itself. Open a downstream cold faucet to release pressure, open the serviceable stop, and flush the toilet. Wait until flow ends and verify no refill. If pressure relief or isolation is uncertain, stop. This rebuild covers only a sound BrassCraft multi-turn stop confirmed for kit BCSR01, never a quarter-turn valve. Keep the valve body on the pipe. Remove the handle screw and handle. Hold the body steady with a second wrench, loosen the bonnet, and unthread the stem. Stop for corrosion, stuck parts, a damaged seat, or any pipe movement. Fit the new bibb washer at the stem tip and the friction and packing washers in the kit diagram's order. Do not improvise with tape. Thread the stem in gently and reinstall the bonnet, handle and screw without overtightening. Close the repaired stop and restore upstream water slowly. The drained toilet must stay empty. Check for seepage, then open the stop fully and test a normal fill and flush. Recheck at rest. If bonnet adjustment is needed, isolate and depressurize again first. Persistent leaks, binding or incomplete shutoff mean leave it safely isolated and call a plumber.
04 / THE PROCEDURE
Work gently. Check as you go.
- Isolate upstream Close a working upstream/main supply, never the failed fixture valve as the sole isolation. Coordinate a shared-building shutoff. Open a downstream cold faucet to relieve pressure and drain; open the serviceable fixture stop and flush the toilet. Verify flow ends and the tank does not refill before loosening anything.
- Stop if isolation is uncertain Keep the upstream control accessible. Persistent flow, inability to establish a clear pressure-relief path, a stuck handle, or uncertainty about the correct supply means stop and get a plumber. Do not crack open the bonnet to find out whether water is off.
- Remove only the internal assembly Catch residual water. Remove the handle screw and handle. Counterhold the body without twisting the pipe, loosen the bonnet nut, then unthread and withdraw the old stem. Do not disturb inlet or outlet connections. Stop rather than force a seized bonnet.
- Inspect and fit the kit Check for damage and remaining loose washer fragments. A damaged seat, corrosion or unmatched parts ends this repair. Fit the supplied bibb washer, friction washer and packing exactly as shown on the BCSR01 package; do not add thread tape or improvised packing to this prescribed stack.
- Reassemble gently Insert and thread the matching stem without cross-threading. Reinstall the bonnet, handle and screw. Use hand tools and avoid overtightening. Keep the body fixed; any pipe movement is a stop signal.
- Restore and test Close the repaired stop gently, restore the upstream supply slowly, and check that the drained toilet does not refill. Inspect the bonnet and body. Open the stop slowly to its fully open operating position, allow a normal fill, and check again while flushing and at rest. Manage the open pressure-relief faucet as water returns; once air is purged, close it and verify it is not left running.
- Handle any seep safely The package permits bonnet adjustment for seepage. Isolate upstream and relieve pressure again before a small correction; do not crush the packing. If leakage, binding or incomplete shutoff remains, leave water safely isolated and call a plumber.
05 / VERIFY THE RESULT
Check operation and every disturbed joint.
- With upstream water restored and repaired stop closed, a drained tank receives no refill.
- With stop fully open, the toilet fills normally and no seep appears at the stem, bonnet, body or pipe connections.
- Valve operates without force; no pipe movement. Recheck after a flush and at rest.
KNOW YOUR LIMITS
Stop and get qualified help when…
- No verified upstream isolation or ongoing pressure/flow
- Quarter-turn or unknown/unmatched valve, missing instructions or incompatible components
- Stuck/corroded parts, damaged seat/body, fragments that cannot be removed safely, or any pipe movement
- Leak persists, handle binds, or repaired valve still cannot isolate water
