Reconnect the rod through the stopper eye, then adjust this Moen drain’s linkage. Close the sink supplies, open the faucet to verify no flow, then turn it off and empty the basin. Put a bucket below; wear gloves and eye protection. Stop for failed shutoffs, drain cleaner, corrosion, or damage. Release the clip and detach the rod from the strap. Unscrew its nut, withdraw the rod, and lift the stopper. Clean its sealing edge. Fit the white nylon seat, cup facing outward. Lower the stopper, eye toward the port. Slide the nut onto the rod; guide its short tip through the eye. Seat the ball and snug the nut without binding. Push the outer rod end down to open the stopper. Refit the clip around the strap, passing the rod through both clip holes and a suitable strap hole. Adjust the strap screw for full travel. Restore water. Test water retention closed, free drainage open, and the pivot joint for leaks. Replace matching parts if adjustment fails.

01 / MATCH YOUR DESIGN

Confirm this is your version.

  • Moen 10790 all-metal bathroom drain with pivot rod, white nylon seat, retaining nut, strap and spring clip.
  • The nylon seat's cup faces outward toward the pivot ball. The short rod tip passes through the stopper eye; the retaining nut stays on the long outer-rod side.
  • Push the outer rod end down to raise the stopper, then connect the clip through a suitable strap hole and adjust for full travel.
  • Other drain styles, push-click stoppers and unmatched pivot seats need their own instructions.

Representative educational geometry, not manufacturer CAD or certification. Use the instructions supplied with your exact fixture and replacement part.

02 / CHECK BEFORE BUYING

Find the source of the problem.

  • Check whether the outer rod has detached from the strap, the rod misses the stopper eye, or travel is limited.
  • Clean the stopper's sealing edge. Damaged seals or parts may require matched replacement rather than further adjustment.

03 / PARTS & PREPARATION

Have the right tools ready.

  • Bucket, towels, gloves and eye protection
  • Screwdriver suitable for the lift-rod strap screw
  • Soft brush/cloth and exact matching drain parts if adjustment is insufficient

04 / THE PROCEDURE

Work through the repair.

  1. Isolate and verify. Close the sink supplies, open the faucet to verify no flow, then turn it off and empty the basin. Put a bucket below; wear gloves and eye protection. Stop for failed shutoffs, drain cleaner, corrosion, or damage.
  2. Release and clean the stopper. Release the clip and detach the rod from the strap. Unscrew its nut, withdraw the rod, and lift the stopper. Clean its sealing edge.
  3. Seat and engage the rod. Fit the white nylon seat, cup facing outward. Lower the stopper, eye toward the port. Slide the nut onto the rod; guide its short tip through the eye. Seat the ball and snug the nut without binding.
  4. Reconnect and adjust the linkage. Push the outer rod end down to open the stopper. Refit the clip around the strap, passing the rod through both clip holes and a suitable strap hole. Adjust the strap screw for full travel.
  5. Test sealing, drainage and leaks. Restore water. Test water retention closed, free drainage open, and the pivot joint for leaks. Replace matching parts if adjustment fails.

05 / VERIFY THE RESULT

Test operation and check for leaks.

  • Restore water and confirm that the closed stopper holds water.
  • Open the stopper and confirm free drainage and full linkage travel.
  • Inspect the pivot joint with dry tissue during draining and at rest.

KNOW YOUR LIMITS

Stop and get qualified help when…

  • Failed shutoffs, chemical drain cleaner, corrosion or damage
  • Cracked drain body, stripped nut, missing/unmatched seat or binding rod
  • You cannot achieve full travel without forcing the linkage
  • The stopper still will not seal or the pivot joint leaks

Use your actual parts prices, tool costs and an all-in local service quote when deciding. A cheaper repair is not worth unsafe isolation or water damage.
