Switch the disposal off and turn off the water. This cord-connected InSinkErator Badger 5 has a red manual-reset button. Unplug its cord and keep the plug under your control. Never put a hand in the chamber. Seat a Jam-Buster wrench, or quarter-inch Allen wrench, fully in the bottom-center socket. Rock it both ways until it moves freely through complete turns. Remove the wrench. Use a flashlight, then long tongs or pliers, to lift out the obstruction. Keep fingers above the sink opening. With power still disconnected, let the motor cool for three to five minutes. Then gently press the red reset button. If it won’t stay in, wait ten more minutes and try once. If it still won’t hold, stop. Remove every tool. Keep the switch off while reconnecting the dry plug. Run cold water, then switch on briefly. Switch off and let water rinse the drain. For renewed humming, another trip, leakage, or a burning smell, disconnect power and arrange service. Hardwired units and other models need their own isolation and reset instructions.
01 / MATCH YOUR DESIGN
Confirm this is your version.
- Cord-connected InSinkErator Badger 5 with a bottom-center wrench socket and separate red manual-reset overload button, following manual 79158-ISE Rev. C.
- Keep the unplugged cord under your control throughout wrench work, obstruction removal, cooling and resetting. Never put a hand into the chamber.
- Hardwired disposals, other models and newer automatic-reset/EZ Connect designs require their own isolation and reset procedure. This page does not cover electrical work.
Representative educational geometry, not manufacturer CAD or certification. Use the instructions supplied with your exact fixture and replacement part.
02 / CHECK BEFORE BUYING
Find the source of the problem.
- A hum or overload trip may indicate a jam, but can also have other causes. Switch off immediately rather than repeatedly running a stalled motor.
- Do not use this procedure for leaking housings, damaged cords, a burning smell or an inaccessible/uncertain power disconnect.
03 / PARTS & PREPARATION
Have the right tools ready.
- InSinkErator Jam-Buster wrench or 1/4-inch Allen wrench
- Flashlight and long-handled tongs or pliers
- An accessible dry plug and a way to keep it under your control; eye protection
These checks are for your use. They do not certify compatibility and are not saved.
04 / THE PROCEDURE
Work through the repair.
- Switch off and unplug. Switch the disposal off and turn off the water. This cord-connected InSinkErator Badger 5 has a red manual-reset button. Unplug its cord and keep the plug under your control. Never put a hand in the chamber.
- Free the mechanism. Seat a Jam-Buster wrench, or quarter-inch Allen wrench, fully in the bottom-center socket. Rock it both ways until it moves freely through complete turns. Remove the wrench.
- Remove obstruction, cool and reset.
- Reconnect and test briefly. Remove every tool. Keep the switch off while reconnecting the dry plug. Run cold water, then switch on briefly. Switch off and let water rinse the drain.
- Stop for recurring symptoms. For renewed humming, another trip, leakage, or a burning smell, disconnect power and arrange service. Hardwired units and other models need their own isolation and reset instructions.
05 / VERIFY THE RESULT
Test operation and check for leaks.
- Remove all tools, leave the switch off and reconnect only a dry plug.
- Run cold water before a brief powered test. Switch off, let water rinse the drain and check for recurrence.
- If the motor hums, trips or leaks, switch off and disconnect power before arranging service.
KNOW YOUR LIMITS
Stop and get qualified help when…
- You cannot positively disconnect power or keep the plug under your control
- The wrench will not turn freely, or the obstruction cannot be removed with long tongs
- The reset will not hold after the specified cooling and one later retry
- Renewed humming, another trip, leakage, burning smell or damaged cord
Use your actual parts prices, tool costs and an all-in local service quote when deciding. A cheaper repair is not worth unsafe isolation or water damage.
